A concept agricultural tire containing 75% sustainable materials has been produced by Apollo Tyres at its Perambra plant in Kerala, India.

The product features nine compounding ingredients in different components of the tire, including rubber, sustainable carbon black recycled from end-of-life tires, bio-based oil, recycled nylon and bead wire that has been processed with a higher recycled content. Furthermore, the base polymers used within the tire’s construction are GPSNR certified with bio-circular-based feedstock.

The project is aligned with Apollo Tyres’ sustainability roadmap of increasing the company’s usage of sustainable raw material to 40% by 2030.

“This is a big milestone in the sustainability journey of Apollo Tyres,” explained P Mohamed, chief advisor of R&D at Apollo Tyres. “Being the early movers in this space, especially in India, and with investments in R&D and manufacturing [aimed at]achieving the 40% sustainable material target by 2030, we have been able to develop this tire with 75% sustainable materials, which is now being tested extensively before being commercialized.”
